The Torn Edges Series

Expressive mark making with pastel, oil stick, charcoal, and pencil are woven through each piece. Incising lines are scratched into the surface at each layer to build history and reveal the texture beneath.

The history of a painting is much like the human experience.

Each event leaves a mark, creating a break or fray in our personal fabric, or adding subtle marks to our rich tapestry. Each mark create a balance of perfect imperfection.

About The Series

Torn Edges is an ongoing collection of abstract paintings exploring layering mixed media to create texture and depth. Ripped and torn fabric that’s frayed at the edges has been collaged into many of these works.

"When I create, I do so to quiet the world around me, to temporarily shut out the noise and chaos of life. When the energy is aligned, the work flows — easy, graceful, uncomplicated.”

You can find process videos and photos of past, present, and works in progress, on Paige’s instagram account here.

Paige Ring is a self-taught abstract painter living in Toronto, ON. Her work is inspired by minimalism, texture and line work.

Paige studied costume design at Dalhousie University, then went on to study and work in fashion design, later producing collections for several international department stores. Cloth was the first medium she truly learned to appreciate. Using just a roll of all white canvas, she could layer, pleat, fold, drape, and ultimately turn it into a really complex piece of art. It helped form her appreciation for how complex simple things can be. This is a perspective she seeks in her fine art practice.

Her work incorporates bold gestural strokes, vibrant colour, and layering of organic marks and scrapes weaving through the paint. She often uses a limited palette with just a few colors. Color tells a story all on its own, the technique of how the color is applied, smooth and soft vs bold and loose, gives that story life.

Paige’s work has been placed in private collections in Canada, the US, throughout Europe, and South America.

Original artwork can be found on display at Arta Gallery in Toronto’s beautiful Distillery District and also at Crescent Hill Gallery in Mississauga.

My home just got about 10 billion times nicer! This masterpiece painting from Paige just arrived, and it’s more beautiful than I could have imagined. Absolute perfection!”
